Editor’s new year update on volunteering opportunities and how the Sustainability Leaders Project embraces the 2017 UN Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.
Last week we presented you our 2016 Sustainability Leaders correspondents Ana (South America), Tracy (Central America) and Judy (East Africa).Today we invite you to get to know our fantastic team of volunteer assistants. Without their skills, ideas and help Sustainability Leaders wouldn’t exist as it does today (keep an eye on our Vacancies page for open positions). As we continue to expand, the Sustainability Leaders team grows with us. Big thanks from the editors!
We are sad to hear that Maurice Strong passed on yesterday. In this obituary, Professor Geoffrey Lipman (whose interview we will publish next week) remembers his good friend and reminds us of just how much a single person can achieve with dedication, wit and a deep appreciation for our planet and its peoples. Much needed inspiration for world’s future leaders – especially in travel and tourism.
Three weeks after the World Travel Market (WTM) in London with its Responsible Tourism Day, another important sustainable tourism event took place in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain) from 26-27 November 2015: The World Summit on Sustainable Tourism (ST+20). Organized by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and the Basque Tourism Agency (Basquetour) – with the support of UNWTO and UNESCO – this event marks 20 years since the creation of the Charter for Sustainable Tourism.
Great news: the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has become the latest supporter of Sustainability Leaders in Travel and Tourism (Sustainability-Leaders.com) and joins the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), among others, in endorsing our initiative. Established in 1972, UNEP is the voice for the environment within the United Nations system and acts as a catalyst, advocate, educator and facilitator to promote the wise use and sustainable development of the global environment.
