National Geographic Traveller has described Richard as “a pioneer of eco travel, championing sustainable-yet-exciting ways to explore the world”.

Richard was Editorial Director of TravelMole 1999–2002, the Guardian’s eco travel correspondent 2004-2008, and has run his successful media production company Green Traveller Productions since 2009, producing Green Traveller Guides to over 50 destinations as well as over 100 videos about sustainable travel and tourism for clients in the public and private sector worldwide, including transport operators, local government, protected landscapes, DMOs, national tourist boards, charities, non-governmental organisations, and conservation organisations.

Richard’s clients have included UNWTO, World Travel and Tourism Council, Travel Foundation, The Long Run, Scottish Natural Heritage, Wildsea, DestiMED, Visit England, Visit Wales, My Switzerland, Greece National Tourist Office, Spanish Tourist Office, ATOUT France, Brittany Ferries, and Eurostar.

Richard has been trained by Albert – the TV and Film industry consortia that is supporting the industry to create positive environmental change. He is also a trained drone pilot with Operational Authorisation from the Civil Aviation Authority to fly drones commercially for photography and videography.

Richard’s consumer website greentraveller.co.uk has featured in lists of the ‘Best Travel Websites’ in The Times, Telegraph, Guardian, and the Independent. The Times described it as “The leading British website for eco-travel – great for news, green travel tips and inspiration for a low-impact holiday” and The Sunday Times wrote: “The journalist Richard Hammond’s web pages are the first place to look for green holidays and for discussions on environmental issues”.

Richard is at the forefront of green travel media. He is currently a judge of the UK Travel Media Awards and the Wanderlust Travel Awards, and he has recently written a book The Green Traveller (published by Pavilion/HarperCollins, 2022), which was featured in ‘The Best Travel Books of 2022’ by Wanderlust Magazine, and had extracts published in The Telegraph, Sunday Times, and Guardian newspaper. He also sends out a free twice-monthly email newsletter, The Green Traveller Digest, which is a round-up of the latest green travel news in the media, including new green hotels, sustainable places to eat and drink, activities that support the conservation of biodiversity, ferry and rail initiatives and routes (including the latest developments to overnight sleeper routes across Europe), as well as other information about travel that is sensitive to the climate and nature emergencies.

How to use social media and other online channels to tell a story – through words, photos, and video

Most of us now use smartphones to upload photos and video to social media, but how do you weave all the content together to tell a meaningful story that engages an audience? Drawing on years of producing content for both the public and private sector, Richard will shine a light on best practice in storytelling, using case studies examples that convey the best aspects of sustainable travel and tourism.

The future of low carbon travel in Europe

Deregulation in the European rail industry has opened up the market for a new breed of entrepreneurial businesses seeking to capitalise on the renaissance of rail. Richard has travelled overland in Europe for over 20 years and brings a wealth of knowledge about the networks and the opportunities for overland travel, including high speed rail, sleeper trains, and rail-sail initiatives.
